This neighborhood park in Roxbury was renovated in tandem with the construction of the adjacent Orchard Gardens K-8 School and new housing in the area. The renovation was overdue, as the play equipment, basketball court, and overgrown plantings had seen better days. In addition, the community members said the park felt unsafe due to a huge concrete stage and dense trees that blocked views into the site.
The new design opens the park up to the neighbors and provides a mix of passive and active recreation. The design incorporates the wishes of the community, and an organization which provides sports activates for neighborhood children. The path layout supports links between the park, the neighborhood and new school. The park now has updated play structures, refurbished basketball courts and baseball field, a new tennis court and a meandering path with benches.
