Blessed Sacrament Campus Mixed Use Development

Jamaica Plain, Boston, MA
2010 (Phase 1 Construction)
The sale of this three and one-half acre Archdiocese site in 2005 with its historically significant cathedral, convent, rectory and two schools elicited strong interest from community groups, because the Cathedral and its campus had played a central role in the lives of many residents. Suggestions brought forth at community meetings provided insights into the past use of the site, current neighborhood needs and helped to guide the programming to a positive outcome. The goals of the landscape design were to support building uses with complementary landscape spaces, incorporate existing historic features, such as the unique iron fencing and stone pillars, into the new landscape and to welcome neighborhood residents into the site. A small plaza along Centre street can provide outdoor seating for a proposed restaurant or small gatherings, and the open green invites families to relax outdoors, The open green is planted with native informal plantings which present a refuge for humans and wildlife alike. The green is transversed by an accessible path which follows past desire lines supporting a pedestrian link between the neighborhood.
