As one of the Boston Schoolyard Initiative sites, the guiding principal of the play yard renovation was to create an outdoor classroom in a natural setting. In addition, this site had major erosion and flooding problems that needed to be addressed and integrated into renovation of the yard.

The design outcome includes a dry stream bed at the base of a hill which captures runoff and redirects rainfall into drywells, it also serves as a seating and climbing area. Parts of the sloping yard are leveled with curved retaining walls; the new areas provide spaces for ball play and a play structure. Several outdoor seating areas, formed with stones, are settings for outdoor lessons and reading. To learn about plant growth cycles, students can work in the raised garden beds and observe native plantings on new accessible pathways.
